Edited by Yossi Leshem, Haim Goren & Hannah Amit

The Lazarist Father Ernst Schmitz was born in Germany in 1845. In 1908, the German Society for the Holy Land appointed him as the director of their institutions in Palestine. Father Schmitz decided to establish a zoological collection of the animals that are mentioned in the Bible and can be seen in the Holy Land and vicinity. The collection has the last specimen of Oryx, Cheetah, Crocodile, and Roe Deer known here, as well as Leopard and the Verneauxi's Eagle, Caracal and about 250 other species.

Father Schmitz wrote about 70 papers documenting invaluable data mainly on the fauna of the Holy Land between 1908 and 1922.
  • Strange creatures in the Holy Land
  • Something on the ants of Palestine
  • On the locust plague in Palestine
  • Crocodiles in Palestine
  • A fight with a Leopard
  • Will Palestine be Jewish again?
And many other essays.

Dr. Yossi Leshem, zoologist at the Department of Zoology, Tel Aviv University, and colleagues decided to translate all of Father Schmitz's papers to the English language in order to make them available to the wider public.
